The Alameda, with the colonial mails of 6th October, reached San> Francisco from Auckland on the 26th Outober, one day late. Benmobe Station.—The Executive Committee of the Otago Employers' Association have passed the following resolution:— "That the attention of the association having been directed to the recent correspondence between the manager and owners of Benmore station on the one part and the Commissioner of Police on the other, in which the latter declines to afford police protection in case of violence being attempted towards the station or its employees, on the ground that some of the men employed are -not on good terms with the Workers' Union, this association protest most emphatically against such a doctrine as being entirely subversive of freedom of contract, and an entire surrender of the principal function of Government —viz., the protection of the liberties of citizens in the exercise of their lawful callings, and the prevention and punishment of crime. A copy of this resolution to be forwarded to the Government for their consideration." The proposal to construct as a great attraction for the exhibition of 1900 (says a London despatch of August) a monster telescope able to show the inhabitants of the moon, if there be any, has been mooted, and Mr Deschoenafchein is said to be willing to advance 2,000,000 francs to the cost.
