Sydney, Oct. 19. The Judge, in summing up in the Grassmere riot cases, Baid that he was often surprised thot the free labourers did not arm themselves to resist outrages. Without encouraging the use of firearms he considered men justified in Usipg weapons if they had a reasonable idea that their lives were endangered. If the freemen organised and armed themselves there would be fewer cowardly outrages perpetrated. The prisoners were convicted and sentence was deferred. Oct. 20. At Broken Hill 24 men were charged with being concerned in a riot at Moamba station. One hundred and ten jurors were challenged. After a trial occupying I the whole day the men were acquitted. The Northern Miners' Association find a difficulty in providing to support the strikers out of work. The demand made on the funds of the association requires a 25 per cent, levy on the miners who are in work, but for some time past they have refused to pay an or 10 per cent, levy, and it is, therefore, impossible to obtain a larger amount. The question of dissolving the association is under consideration. ;,, Melbourne, Oct. 19. The unemployed have formed committees representing the various suburbs, with the object of urging the local members to bring pressure on the Government in favor of the unemployed. At Christchurch the committee which organised the Labour Day demonstration in 1893 has arranged for a similar demonstration this year. The date has not yet been fixed.
