ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.
Mrs Pyne, wife of Mr Pyne, plumber, met with a serious accident on Wednesday morning, in the shop of Black, Beattie & Co., drapers, Christchurch. Two of the employees were moving an empty case «on the upper floor close to two large rolls of cocoanut matting, which were standing one upon another. The struck the lower roll and tilted it, and it is supposed that as it fell back against the wall the shock shot the upper one forward and sent it flying over the railing surrounding tne “'well” for admitting light to the ground floor. The railing was about five feet from the rolls of matting. Mrs Pyne was sitting before the counter on the ground floor and the roll' of matting struck her on the back. It is believed that her spine is seriously injured, and she is now in a critical condition. . Mr Robert Martin, editor of the Napier Daily Telegraph,died suddenly at 3 o’clock on Wednesday morning of heart disease. Deceased was a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland, and about 50 years of ago, and arrived in the colony 20 years ago for the benefit of his health. Constable Duggan died suddenly on Wednesday while on duty in the Lowburn district, Otago. The supposed cause of death was apoplexy. Ue was single, and joined the force in 1882. Edward McDonald, a farmer of Patearoa, near Naseby, was accidentally killed by a roller passing over him. gainnftl Pearce was brought before the Police Court at Auckland and charged with that he did kill and slay Minnie Hope. He was remanded till Wednesday next, and liberated on bail. A child, four years old, daughter of Mr ,T. Johnston, Waituna, near Marton, was badly burned on Tuesday, through her clothing catching fire in some unknown manner. She died last Wednesday night.
