S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Tuesday. Present Messrs Jackson (chairman), Moore, Gillingham, White, Hill (Mayor of Timaru), and Coltman (Mayor of Waimate). An apology was received from Mr Talbot. Dr Lovegrove waited upon the board, and stating that he was about to leave Timaru tendered his resignation as a member of the honorary medical staff. He also introduced Dr Bowe, who succeeds to his practice, and suggested that he should be appointed to fill the vacancy on the medical staff. Members expressed their appreciation of Dr Lovegrove’s valuable services, and accepted his resignation with regret. Dr Bowe was then appointed to fill the vacancy. Tenders for painting the female ward were dealt with —-J. L. Higgs & Co., £3B; G. Murdoch, £44 10s; R. Edwards, £4B 15s; Wallace & Co., £63 2s 9d ; J. Cooper & r>on, £7B.—On the motion of Messrs White and Hill it was.resolved — “ That the tender of Mr Murdoch be accepted, as we consider the tender of Qiggs & Co. too cheap to do a good job.” Tenders were received for the lease of the old hospital reserve for one or three years (at per annum) as follows: — Kernohan & Co., £6—£s; T. Sullivan, £7 ss—£7 10s; Tyrrell, King & Co., £7 10s—£7 15s; T. Tuite, nil—£lo (accepted). A mass of correspondence was read regarding charitable aid cases, and some orders were made thereon. One case was reported in which a family had been living for some time on potatoes and salt, the mother was suckling an infant, who was starving for lack of nourishment. Rations had been given in this case by the local police office, and a neighbour promised bread and milk for a fortnight. Among the correspondence were several police reports on inquiries made for parents responsible for the maintenance of children. In one of these cases the mother had eloped to the North Island, to be married there, she having left no address for her children or tfio board.
