Paris, Oct. 7.
It is reported that owing to threats from the dredger strikers, the Suez Canal Company have asked France to land a military force to protect the canal. The report, however, is generally discredited.
Sydney, Oct. 8. The master printers have refused to submit the matter in dispute with the employees to arbitration.
An executive meeting of the New Zealand Workers' Union was held at Waimate on Saturday evening. Mr Brown was in the chair. Correspondence was dealt with from Hastings, Master ton, Gore, and Timaru branches, reporting progress; from Gisborne asking that a branch be opened there; from Mro Garmson, Christchurch, and Mr Spence, Victoria, on Australian shearing matters, from the Government Registrar re amended rules, from various members on matters in connection with the society. The secretary was instructed to arrange the opening of a branch at Gisborne. A long discussion ensued respecting the Benmore correspondence, after which a resolution was carried strongly protesting aga'iiiat'the statement of the manager, who declared that the members of the Workers' Union had threatened to commit violence, such being contrary to fact. It was resolved to hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss organising work, after which the proceedings ended.
