He then called on Mr Baxter, the chairman of the committee, to make the presentation which he did in very gracious terms. In replying, Mr Goldstone very heartily thanked the residents for the tangible way in which they valued his services. He referred to the pleasant three years he had spent among them, saying he was actuated by one motive: to promote the educational interests of his charge, and to make good and useful members of those entrusted to his care. He said if he had in any way slighted or hart the feelings of any one he was heartily sorry and asked their forgiveness. He would ever \ prize their gift as a memento of happy times at Upper Waitohi. The desk bore the following inscription:—" Presented to Mr C. J. Goldstone, by the residents of Upper Waitohi, on the occasion of his leaving the district.—6th September 1894." Three ringing British cheers were lustily given for Mr Goldstone at the conclusion of the presentation, and the audience struck up " For bo's a jolly good fellow." Mr Goldstone gracefully returned thanks on his sister's behalf, and the audience resumed with "For she's a jolly good fellow," until the old rpfters cracked. From that on dance and song succeeded

each other, until, with the singing of "Auld LaDg Syne," the jolly company broke up at 2 a.m. During the evening songs were sung by the school ch ;, dren, under Mr Goldatone'a charge, by

Mi«B Jones (Pleasant Point), Mr Tait (of Timaru), who is inimitable, Mr Bum (of Kakahn), Mr Fraser (Waitohi Flat), and Mr Goldstone. Mr Tenuent treated
