Plaintiff a few months ago was suspended, and read a statement at a meeting of ratepayers dealing with the action of the board. The case was tried before Mr Justice Denniaton and a special jury of four. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant.

Bablbt. —A correspondent of the Christchurch Press advises farmers to go in for barley. He says:—" Last season there was a keen demand for barley. Any good sample was eagerly bought, and if there hud been 100,000 bushels more it could have been sold. The demand next season will be much keener, owing to the fact that there are not any stocks of barley to carry over. I know from good authority that there is considerably less than half the quantity of malt in stock owing to there being not any malting barley in the market." The writer recommends (on the experience of experiments at Home) the use of nitrate of soda with superphosphates for barley—loolb of nitrate and 1501 b of phosphates per acre will more than double the crop. Messrs Begg & Co., Timaru, have just brought out a remarkably instructive and useful little book which should be in the hands of every owner or contemplated owner of a piano. Its title is " How to Tune and Repair Your Own Piano," describing exactly how to do it. Price, Is. If the advice contained in- its pages is kept in mind it will save the owners a great amount of trouble and worry and itinerant piano tuner.—[Advt.]
