Nearly one thousand bootmakers struck to-day in consequence of fifty firms refusing to recognise the statement of rates. The factories are picketed, The majority of strikers are non-unionists. A number of unionists who are engaged in the shops which do pay statement rates have been granted a holiday to assist iu organising the strike, their employers fully sympathising with the men working iu the non-statement shops. It is officially announced that the shearers are breaking up the camps with the object of carrying on the strike on an entirely different line. A party of unionists fired a volley at Dagworth woolshed, and a number of men who were watching the building returned their fire. Under cover of the shooting, the unionists managed to set fire to the shed but the flames were extinguished- The dead body of a unionist was afterwards found, and he is supposed to have been shot during the fusillade. The Unionists have burned the Dogsworth shed and it is believed that the same gang who fired other sheds is connected with the outrage.

The Trades and Labour Council at Wellington unanimously resolved to enter a strong protest against auy import duty being placed on dour and coal.
