TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The regular monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs Russell (chairman), M. Scanpell, J. W, Mileß ? T. F. Hooper, G. lievens, D. Baylor, G. Davey, and J. Grant. CQRKBSPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows :-rTr From the Education Board, notifying pgymeqt to the credit of the committee of the sum of £ll* 10a 3d for incidentals lor current quarter.
From the same, covering summary attendance returns for quarter. From the same covering Inspector report. • This was of a satisfactory character, and was ordered to be left open for inspection. From the Taradale School Committee, Hawkesßay, making lengthy suggestions as to the advisability and method of making the system of education uniform throughout the colony. From the Secretary of Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association, drawing attention to the way in which the governoring body of Canterbury College is elected, and suggesting that in place of the Governors being elected by a few students, that this important institution should be placed under the more direct control of the people resident in North and South Canterbury. A reprint from the Lyttelton Times of Tuesday, July 27th, dealing with the subject, accompanied the letter. •- From the Secretary Timaru School Committee, suggesting that there should be a conference of delegates from various committees, at the Timarm Main School on September 22nd, and asking this committee to arrange for representation. The several letters were considered at length, and the following resolutions p&BBOli* Be the Taradale Committee: The original resolution passed by that body was “ That in the opinion of this committee the present practice of leaving the inspection aud examination of each education district, and school district, year after year, in the hands of the same officer is not conducive to the best interest of education. It is therefore desirable to approach all the school committees of New Zealand, with a view to obtaining their co-operation in representing to the Minister of Education the propriety of making arrangements that no school shall be under the same inspector for two successive years. 5 5 On the motion of Mr Miles it was resolved “ That this committee endorses the resolution of the Taradale School Committee, with the proviso that the inspectors be appointed for not more than two years. Re Canterbury College: On the motion of Mr Sc&nnell it was resolved “ That the committee approve of the principle of the Board of Governors being ■ elected by a body outside the students. 55 Re Conference : It was resolved that the secretary inform the Timaru Committee that the Temuka School Committee will send a delegate to the conference, and it was agreed to discuss at next meeting subjects that can bo advantageously laid before the conference. HEAD master’s REPORT. The head master reported that the attendance for the last week was 304, with a roll of 342. The attendance had suffered during the month through the prevalence of sickness. He enclosed contributions of 6s from Mr Livingstone, and 2s from Mr Duncan towards Arbor Day celebration. VISITORS. Mr Russell reported upon the repairs to the spouting, which had been carried out in a satisfactory way. The lavatories required repairs, and drainage required attention. The school work seemed to be progressing well.—lt was resolved to ask the board to allow their architect to report on the drainage and condition of lavatories. Messrs Miles and Levens were appointed visitors for the ensuing month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £4 19a lid were passed for payment. VOTE OF THANKS. On the motion of Mr Levens a vote of vote of thanks was unanimously passed to Mr and Mrs Gaze for services rendered in connection with Arbor Day. The meeting then terminated.
