VISIT OF MR MASLIN.

Mr W. S. Maslin, looking none the worse for his sojourn in the realm of politics, paid a flying visit to Geraldine on Monday last, arriving by the express from Christchurch. Mr Maslin intended to have reached Geraldine on Saturday last, but his boat was delayed and thus he missed the train and had to remain in Christchurch over Sunday. He appears to have been well treated at Wellington, and political life, we might say, evidently agrees with him, although he gives us to understand—in sense if not in words — that a politician’s life at his post is not all beer and skittlei. He has not even time to read the daily newspapers as he would like, for there are Bills to read and study; no end of telegrams and letters to answer, speeches to prepare, sittings of the House and committees to attend, and other business which few people are aware of, not to mention the late sittings of the House, which, by the way, Mr Maslin strongly opposes. The local members-—Messrs Maslin and Flatman —and Mr Joyce, of Lyttelton, are all quartered together in private lodgings at Wellington, and we can imagine that they make ah extremely happy family. We tried hard to draw Mr Maslin out for an interview, but he was not “on”; no doubt he would rather reserve his “ say ” till the vacation comes, when he will give an account of himself. From what we can gather, he thinks a grave mistake has been made by Geraldine not allowing Temuka to be tacked on to the Levels County, but.no doubt he will explain this fully later on. Mr Maslin is of opinion that the Conservative Press have greatly exaggerated the “ Scene in the House” over the Hon. John McKenzie’s Land for Settlement Bill; although he (Mr Maslin) voted for the adjournment of the debate, so that it could be discussed more fully. Mr Maslin expects that Parliament will be prorogued from about the end of September or the beginning of October next. The member for Rangitata will then, after harvest, give pre-sessional addresses in the various districts of his constituency. Mr Maslin left for Wellington again by Tuesday’s express north.
