The Agricultural Department has issued a command That all good colonists thronghont (he Maoriland Will, in celebration, one day in Augnst keep each year As Arbor Day—l write it that young and ' old may hear; And may the young folk, by the older ones directed, Turn out in force that day for the favored spot selected With eager hands and willing minds.; each youngster soon will learn How qnickly trees are planted when taken in their turn. A little care when planting, in after years will show The youngsters of to-day how rapidly (hey grow. And when the native forests are rarely to r be seen The artificial ones will be waving tall end green; Then once again will ring the bnshmaa’e busy aze and saw, And down the teams will come away the wood to draw. The farmer’s wife, within her house, a smiling face will show, As the logs upon the hearth sends forth a ruddy glow; And the good man’s heart will torn again with joy In thinking of the active part he took when quite a boy ; And, turning to his children, with honest pride will say, The trees I planted just forty years to-day I Mark them in the forest, what a noble show they make, And at some future time we may our luncheon take Beneath their spreading shade; our merry games we’ll play, Returning home, three cheers we’ll give for Arbor Day.
