LECTURE.

A lecture was delivered by Mr Peckover last evening in the Wesleyan Church, Temuka. The Rev. Mr Standage occupied the chair, and, after the singing of a hymn and offering up prayer, briefly introduced the lecturer. The subject of the lecture was reminiscences of his African life. Beginning with his leaving England, he took a rapid glance of Madiera, Cape Colony, Natal, Orange Free State, Basutoland, etc. He gave an interesting account of the poisonous snakes, and also of the Secretary Bird, which is their natural enemy. Pietermaritzburg bore a resemblance to Christohurob, and waß the seat of the Government of Natal. The object of Sir Bartle Frere's visit, with whom the lecturer travelled, was to consult the Government of Natal with regard to a difference with Cetewayo. The lecturer then gave a description of the war with Cetewayo at great length, and proceeded to give an interesting description of Natal, Orange Free State, Transvaal, and Basutoland, aod proceeded with an account of the war with the Boers. He spoke for about two hours, and was patiently listened to throughout.' At the end of the lecture a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Peckover was carried by acclamation on the motion of the Rev. Mr Standage. He promised to continue the lecture on another evening.
