RACES AT ORARI. A s nail private race meeting was held at the Orari course on Thursday last under most favourable auspices; the weather was capital, and over 200 people were present from Geraldine, Temuka, Winchester, and other places. In fact, the promoters of the races were much astonished at the number of “ sports” and others that put in an appearance, it being surprising how quickly the thing got “wind.” The first race started at 3 p.m, between Mr Deßenzy’s Dust (O’Brien), and Mr R. Hood’s Refused (Smith), weights Bst 71b up. Mr Pearpoint got the pair away with a good start, Refused immediatley going to the front, and outstripping Dust to the finish. Won by a good lead. Time, 53secs. The next race was between Mr A. Crow’s, hunter Rata and Mr A. S. Sugden’s Daisy, owners up. This was a splendid race, the onlookers enjoying it immensely. Daisy was in good fettle, having been well trained for the event. She was quickest on her feet, and won, without turning a hair, by several lengths. The final race was between Mr Geo. Bethune’s Lopear and Mr F. Warner’s Fire- King (owners up). Lopear got the best of the start, which was held till coming into the straight, when Fire King caught up, and an exciting neck and neck race ensued to the finish; the judge’s decision being “ a dead heat.” The races were each half mile distances. Mr R. H. Pearpoint acted as clerk of scales and starter, and Messrs F. Wilson Smith and R. Hood as judges.
