LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETINGS.

CLOSING OF HOTELS. At the meeting of the Christchurch Licensing Committee on Monday evidence was heard on behalf of twelve bouses to which notice of closing had been given. It was decided to grant licenses to Tattersall’s Hotel, Caversham Hotel, and Albion Hotel, and to close the Golden Fleece Hotel, Junction Hotel, Victoria Hotel, White Horse Hotel, Britannia Hotel, Albert Hotel, Garrick Hotel, and the Scotch Stores. Largely signed petitions to the committee, to reconsider its decision that the universal hour of closing should be 10 p.m., were put in, but the committee declined to make any extension. The committee passed a re-

solution recommending to the Government or the proper authorities that a periodical inspection and analysis of liquor should take place not less than three times a year, and at any other times which the inspector may deem desirable. The Invercargill Licensing Committee on Monday finally decided not to grant

renewals of licenses to seven hotels—the Prince of Wales, Union, Stag’s Head, Supreme Court, Mitson’s, Golden Fleece, and Strathearn. Mr Rattray, solicitor for several applications, asked the committee to appoint some one of their number to accept service, of writs as‘ the decisions were likely to be questioned with a view of having an authoritative ruling on the provisions of the Acts. Mr Wade, solicitor, told the committee that their decision meant war to the knife with the committee, who would find themselves individually affected in business. He said that the committee had been guilty of wilful, wanton, deliberate, and gross injustice. As the committee retired indications of dissatisfaction came from the body of the court.

At a meeting of the farmers held at Invercargill, a resolution was passed asking the licensing commiteee to reconsider their decision about refusing the license to the Prince of Wales Hotel. The A. and P. Association are also moving in the matter. The Taieri Licensing Committee refused to grant licenses tp the Mosgiel Hotel, Mosgiel, and the Reliance Hotel, Orakia. An application for an accommodation license at Berwick was refused.
