MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

The usual meeting of this board was held on Friday, 15th June, all members being present. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary asking the board to express their opinion as to the advisability, or not, of having a close season for hares. The clerk was instructed to reply that in the board’s opinion it would be most unwise to protect hares, seeing that they are rapidly spreading in the back country. The Surveyor-General wrote informing the board that £64 had been granted to road, Arundel Village, the work to be done on the co-operative system by the village settlers. The Hon. J. B. A. Acland read some information he had obtained as to the expenditure of the Geraldine Road Board, showing their large expenditure over and above receipts, being £1842 during the last two years. The matter was allowed to drop, as apparently there b«d been no success in obtaining signatures to the petition asking the board to take steps to merge the Geraldine and Mount Peel Boards into a county. No Stition was laid before the board. Mr Mackay asked the board to express their opinion as to whether the county should reduce the expenditure in dealing with the small birds’ nuisance. The board agreed that the expenditure should be reduced. Mr Thew gave notice of his intention to bring forward a motion at next meeting—“ That no rate be struck for this year.” The board decided to fflear a patch of manuka on.Gudex road, cost not to exceed £5. The board granted their chairman (the Hon. J. B. A. Acland) leave of absence during the sitting of the House. It was resolved that the clerk send out notices to dear gone on roads. It was resolved that Mr Scully bo paid £7 for work done at Rokey Point, Cattle YaJley road, or the work to be finished according to agreement. It was resolved that the bridges (7) in Bainoliffe and Allandale districts be strengthened. The pay-sheet amounted to £236 8s 3d.
