FOOTBALL.
STAR (TIMARU) V. TEMUKA SECOND. A match between teams representing the above clubs was played on the grounds of the latter on Thursday, and proved a win for the Star—2 tries and a goal from a penalty kick to nil. The game throughout was very even, and it. was thought by competent judges that the result should have been a draw. All the Star men played well, as also did the Temuka forward, who were, if anything, superior to their opponents. Some of
the local backs, however, should take a rest. There was dissatisfaction expressed with the decision of the referee, Mr W. Home,
A large number of the spectators behaved in a manner without precedent in the annals of football in Temuka—the field of play was intruded, the " barrack" disgraceful, and hooting not unfrequent. The referee Btopped the game before time, and he was followed for a considerable distance by the gamins, some of whom made use of very "unparliamentary" language. We understand the game was
protested against. The tries were scored by Strachan and Patterson, and Home converted the penalty kick into a neit goal. WAIHI V. UNION. On Thursday afternoon the above clubs met in the first round for the senior championship at Winchester. There was a capital attendance of spectators, and the game was the most stubbornly contested ever played on the ground. Waihi (blue) kicked off, and Union (red) smartly returned the ball. Tne reds made the game a lively one from the very start, and played with the utmost determination. Fiercely contested scrums occupied the most of the first spell. Fish for the blues and Shrimpton for the reds gained some ground. W. Moore relieved the blues by some fine kicks, and marks were obtained by both sides in quick succession, hut the
forwards on both sides made ruuning an utter impossibility. Simpson for the reds gained tome ground by his fine long kicks, and the reds gained a mark withiu easy rang of ihe blues' goal. Mcintosh took the kick, and the ball went within 18 inches of the bar. A piece of hard luck. From a mark gained by Fish, A. Shallard narrowly missed kicking a goal for the blues. The blues, who had hardly got beyond their own 25's, then made a splendid rally, and from a pass by Fish, Alf. Opie darted in and scored the first try right behind. Arthur Shallard kicked a neat goal, and the first Bpell ended with Waibi 5 points, Union nil. The second spell opened badly for the blues, and they were soon on the defensive, their lines being in imminent danger for a short time, and were twice forced down. The blues' fought their way inch by inch amidst immense excitement till their lines were out of danger, and a good iun by Arthur Opie carried the fight into close proximity to the reds' territory. Gardner and Murdoch made most determined efforts to get away, but every attempt was useless. During the last five minutes the reds made a splendid rush, and swept everything before them, but the game ended without further score, as Waihi was forced down and time called. The Union forwards played a splendid game throughout, but the Waihi backs never gave them a chance of scoriug, and the game ended as above. Mr F. Storey, of Temuka, acted as referee, and gave very fair satisfaction. TIMARU V. TEMUKA. A match between the first fifteens of these Clubs took place in Timaru on Thursday afternoon. Timaru had the best of the game, aud won by 8 points, a goal and a try to nil. Poison aud Alfred Boys each scored trys for Timaru, the one by the former being converted by A. Boys. Mr J. Young, of Timaru, acted as referee. The following will represent the Temuka School 2nd in their match with the Winchester School 2nd at Temuka to-day : D. Gibson ; three-quarter-backs, J. Roddjpk, W.
