FOOTBALL.
WAIHI Y. TIMARff. The first match for the senior championship between the representatives of the above clubs was played at Winchester on Thursday afternoon, and after a most exciting game resulted in a most decisive victory for the home team. The match is always looked forward to with great pleasure by the public, as both teams play the game in a manly and spirited style, aiid with the utmost good feeling. The attendance was excellent, and a large number of ladies were present. The new dressing shed came into use for the first time, and proved a great acquisition. Mr G. Strachan acted bb referee, and his decisions seemed to give*universal satis- I faction. Timaru kicked off at a quarter to four, and the ball was promptly returned by Arthur Shallard. The Waihi forwards made a fine dribbling rush, and allowed Dick Stewart to gain the first try for Waihi, from which Arthur Shallard kicked an easy goal. Soon after kicking off Timaru was closely pressed, but Johnstone relieved his side by a strong and well timed run. A free kick was awarded to Timaru and Waihi lines were next vigorously assailed. Another splendid rush by the Waihi forwards soon cleared their lines, and the first spell ended with "Waihi 5 points, Timaru 0. In the second spell Waihi kicked off, and their forwards followiug up smartly F. Shallard gained a mark right in front of the Timaru goal. On second thoughts the referee disallowed the try. On resuming play Arthur Opie made a fine dodgy mn and gained a try for Waihi, but the kick at goal was a failure. Timaru then played up in splendid stylo and Waihi forced dow>j. Alf. Opie next showed up fqr Waihi with a grand run, in which ho leaped clean over the Timaru back and gained a try amid^
loud applause. The kick was again a failure. Free kicks were then awarded to both sideß for offside play, and yet another try was gained by Arthur Sballard for Waihi, and the game resulted, Waihi 14 points, Timaru 0. The backs of both teams played a splendid game, but the Waihi forwards were much superior to the Timaru men. Besides those mentioned Boys (2), Collins, Rapsey, and Armitage did good service for Timaru.
