TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The regular monthly meeting of the I I above was held on Wednesday evening, ii i Present—Messrs A. Bussell (chairman), J. W. Miles, T. F. Hooper, M. Scanned, G. Davey, G. Levens, D. Taylor, C. Bates, and J. Grant. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows: From the Education Board, notifying payment to the credit of the committee of the sum of £ll 14s for incidentals for current quarter. From Mr B. Darroch, requesting the chairman to call a special meeting of committee to consider a complaint against the head master of having severely punished his son. He intimated his desire of having an interview with the committee in order to support charges made.— The chairman stated that he had not called a special meeting as the ordinary one was so near. From the head master relative to above charge, and denying infliction of more punishment than was absolutely necessary to enable him to maintain his authority. HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The head master’s report was as follows: “ I have the honour to report that the attendance still continues to be very satisfactory, the average for the month ending Friday, 11th iast, being boys, 176.4; girls, 136.9; total, 313.3. Roll number for same period, boys, 200; girls, 151; total, 351. “D. Ferguson.” The chairman stated that he had applied for two forms for one of the class rooms, and expected they would be furnished by the board. Mr Salmond had consented to act as a trustee of the Savings Bank while he remained in the district, provided the committee approved. The pump in the school ground was out of order, but in course of repair. The chairman’s action re forms was approved. The committee expressed pleasure at Mr Salmond continuing to act as a trustee. The chairman also drew attention to the advisability of cutting down some of the trees on the north side of tne school ground, as the drill ground was shaded and rendered unpleasantly damp. Mr Davey suggested cutting out all pinna insiynu. It was agreed to defer consideration of the matter till next meeting for enquiry as to whether the trees can be cut down free of cost. VISITORS. Mr Bates, as visitor, reported that the gates at main entrance required attention. The grounds and buildings, except as mentioned by the chairman, were otherwise in good order. —The question of repairs was left to the chairman and secretary. Messrs Scaunell and Davoy were appointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £9 Is 6d were passed for payment. This concluded the general business. MR D.VUUOCU’s COMPLAINT. Mr Darroch waited upon the committee in reference to his letter, and made a statement in support of his charge. The ip-ul master's reply thereto was read to him, and ho having withdrawn the matter wa t discussed in committee. The committee resolved by a majority 0 { ou0 —«That this committee, whilst recognising the necessity of the authority of the head master being maintained, thick that in this particular case the punishment has boon excessive,” The meeting thou terminated.
