CREDITORS' MEETINGS.

RE JAMES WALSH. The firßt meeting of "creditors of James Walah, of Levels Plains, contractor, was held at Timaru on Tuesday. Mr Alex. Montgomery, Deputy Official Assignee presided, and there was a good attendance of creditors. The debtor's statement showed unsecured creditors £42414s Id. rent of 50 acres of land near Kerry town, payable half yearly in advance, due Ist May, to T. Patterson, Oamaru, £l7; total debts : £441 14s Id. Assets—Stock in trade at Levels Plains £157 sa; furniture, £lO ; total, £167 ss; deficiency, £274 9s Id. A portion of the stock in trade (a Massey-Harris binder) was subject to an agreement with the MasseyHarris Company—an old binder value £l9, and two bills, one due May 1895, and the other May 1896. The unsecured creditors were J.Brown £4l, C.F.A. £l9, J. Mundell £36, Guinness aud LeCren £27, Miles and Co. £3O 10s 7d, T. Wells £lO lis, W. Penrose £ls, T. Gorman £l6, Colonial Bank of, New Zealand £36 9s, J. £7 9s 2d. Priest and Holgate £5 ss, J. Blyth £7 ss, J. Findlay £l2, J. Grant £3, G. J. Mason £3, M. Conolly £2, J. Price £2 7s, H. Tovey £1 ss, J. Shaw £4, Gibson and Kennedy £2 Bs, T. Bullick £2, T. Buxton £22, McKibbin £1 Bs, D. Owers £5 3sßd, Reid and Grey £4 5s Id, J. Smith £5, N.M. and A. Co. £2 10s, W. Bowie £2 7s, J. Glasson £llos, G. and T. Young £3 17s, Ayson and Watt £3 14s, J. T. Warren £25, Bank of New Zealand £53, Scarlet and Co. £1 15s, J. McNamara £1 Bs, M. Gray £2 10s, G. P. Wood £2 9s, J. Gardner lis, J. W. White £1 Is, Smithson and Raymond £1 17s. The debts due to the Colonial Bank, J. T. Warren, and the Bank of New Zealand were secured by bills endorsed by J. Egan, W. Moore, aud Richard Hoare respectively. The debtor stated he commenced business 7 years ago with a capital of £24, and he attributed his bankruptcy to bad crops. The bankrupt was closely questioned as to his plant, aud in reply to Mr Priest aud others said that he had not put away any of his plant with hiß neighbours. He had no plant or any other property but what he had mentioned in hits evidence, The meeting was adj lurued until Friday to allow of defendant making an offer. RE ROBERT CALVERT. The first meeting of creditors of Robert Calvert, contractor, was held on Tu9sday. Mr Montgomery presided, and bankrupt and his solicitor, Mr Hay, and Mr I. L. Morris were the only persons present. The meeting was adjourned sine die. The list of creditors is as follows :—Priest & Holdgate £23, I. L. Morris £36, D. Meehan £L3, Gibson & Kennedy £7, J. T. Warren £52 10s, A. Budd £5 Is 7d, S. Mills £6 13s Id, C.F.A. £3O 2s, Kernohau & Co £5 7s lid, J. B. Rutland £l2 10s, T. Wells £ll ss, W. Waddell £4 10s, J. W. White £5, C. Green £1 15s, S. Smart £lO, N. Lane £6 53. There were no assets, and the only secured creditor was W. S. Maslin ; amount of debt £45, value of security (one dray, four horses, two sets harness, and sundries), £SO. In a brief preliminary examination by the Assignee Calvert said that he had been contracting for eight or nine years, and had no capital to start with. His first cause of difficulty was over a contract with the Waimate County Council, water race making, by which he lost between £2OO and £3OO. He had lost £l5O on three contracts which he had taken since—the protection works at the Tengawai, carting shingle for the Levels Road Board, and for one Rodgers.
