THE LOAN COMPANY.
London, May 8. The papers demand that Mr Mundella, President of the Board of Trade, should resign his post in the Ministry after the remarks of Justice Sir R. Y. Williams. The Judge explained to-day that he wished it to be understood that he allocated no blame on anyone in particular. May 9. The Judge has again invited counsel for the directors of the Loan & Mercantile Company to address the Court, and supply additional evidence. They are considering whether they will take advantage of the after. May 10. The Chronicle says that there is a general feeling among members of the House of Commons that Mr Mundella ought to resign the Presidency of the Board of Trade, and leave it unfettered in the task of deciding whether the directors of the Loan & Mercantile Company should be prosecuted. The Times commenting on Judge Williams’s statement says that it is indecent and scandalous for Mr Mundella to retain office in the Ministry, and hopes that Lord Rosebery will intervene. Sydney, May 9. The Sydney Morning Herald considers the result of the Loan & Mercantile investigation, one of the most damaging to the business character of the colonies that has come to light throughout the recent period of financial disturbance. Mr Mundella declines to resign from the Ministry on the ground that Judge Williams’ statement is not a judgment.
