THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
At the Levels Road Board last Tuesday Mr Mee moved—“ That this board take immediate steps to have the Levels Road Board district made a separate county, to be called Timaru County.” He said there was a strong feeling in favor it, and that at the Temuka Conference Messrs Flatman and Tripp favored it, while Mr Talbot strongly opposed it. Mr Balfour said it appeared that Geraldine and Mount Peel wore also about amalgamating into a county. They did not want Temuka, and Temuka did not want to go with the Levels. He thought it was better to wait until they saw what sort of a local Government measure the Government had to submit to Parliament. It was expected there would be a great saving, but he did not think it would be so great as expected. The County Council’s office cost £420, of which £l5O was chargeable to water-races, leaving £270 for clerical work, engineers salary, <Sjc, Qf this £135 was the Levels’ share, of which the engineer got £22 10s. This, he thought, was not excessive. Mr Pringle seconded the motion, and it was carried.
It was decided to consult the board’s solicitor on the subject.
