TIMARU MARKETS. The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Limited, report as follows for week ending Friday, May 4th, 1894 ; Since pur last report fair business has been done iu wheat and oats of good quality,, and we haye placed a considerable quantity at full rates. Some farmers have suffered loss through the defalcations pf &u absconding comipissiou agent, but it is fortunate tfrat the sufferers are comparatively few iu number. Wheat —Old wheat is equired for at ypoegt quotations, for the North Island d elsewhere, but for the most part it is firmly field, owners of vahje differiqg from those of buyers. Wo haye rsady buyers for new wheat of good quality. Wheat—A good enquiry exists for milling qualities, and values show a hardening tendency. Holders of stocks are not anxious to realise at current rate*. Wo quote old tuscau and pearl 2a fid to 2s 7d, hunter’s 2s 5d to 2s fid, now crop 2s 3d to 2s 4d per bushel, f.0.b., sucks extra.
Oats—A moderate amount of business ' is doing, and there is a steadier tone apparent in quotations:—Milling Is 7d to Is Bd, heavy feed Is 6d to Is 7d, long and ordinary Is 3d to Is 5d per bushel, f.0.b., sacks extra. Barley—Malting qualities are rapidly getting into small compass, and good samples command a ready sale at 3s dd to 4s, medium 3s to 3s 6d, thin and inferior are neglected at Is 6d to 2s 6d per bushel delivered, sacks extra. Beans and Peas—Demand is trifling and quotations remain unaltered. Ryegrass—Old pasture and machinedressed, 3s 9d to 4s 3d per bushel; farmers’ parcels, 2s 6d to 3s per bushel, sacks extra. Cocksfoot—Machine-dressed, 4|d to 5Jd; original seed, 2fd to 3Jd per lb, delivered. Potatoes—A fair enquiry exists for this tuber, and there is an upward tendency in value, as there is a feeling that stocks will turn out shorter than the average in this province. Sales have been made at 30s to 32s 6d per ton at country stations. Dairy Produce—Butter in boxes 6£d to 7£d per lb, fresh 8d to 9d per lb. Cheese 4d to 4jd per lb. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. London, May 3. Mr Martin, one of the new directors of the Loan and Mercantile, states that he hopes to see the new company registered without delay. He believes that the prospects of the scheme for encouraging the emigration of small farmers with capital are favorable. May 4. The bank rate of discount is 1J per cent. New South Wales 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 108 ; per cent., 98i; Victorian 4 per cent., 103|; 3J per cent., 97 ; South Australian 4 per cent., 106 i ; 3| per cent., 96£ ; Queensland, 4 per cent., 105£ ; 3i per cent., 95|; Tasmanian, 3J per cent., 97; West Australian 4 per cent., 108; New Zealand 4 per cent., 107 J ; 3J per cent., 100 f. New Zealand long berried wheat, ex warehouse, 26s 6d, market flat and sale restricted; South Australian do, 27s 6d, quiet; Victorian do, 275, flat. New Zealand mutton, first quality, 4id; second quality, 3Jd; lamb, first quality, sd, market depressed. At the wool sales the competition is stronger,land prices a little firmer. “Rata” brand, New Zealand, brought 9d; “ Russell ” brand, lOd. For the Borough of Napier loan of £35,000, at 5h per cent., only £22,000 was subscribed. Melbourne, May 4. The arrangements made with their creditors by the Trodels, lithographers and printers, of Melbourne and Sydney, has been filed in the Insolvency Court. It shows liabilities, £48,000 ; assets, £25,000.
