TEMUKA FLORAL AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of members qf the above Society was held last, night. There were about 20 members present, and Mr E. Herbert w a 3 voted to the chair, minutes qf the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary read the annual report and balance-sheet, which were as follow <— Ladies and submitting the fifth annual report of the above society your cotnupttee have pleasure in stating thflt the year’s proceedings may be regarded as satisfactory under somewhat adverse circumstances, A t your last annual meeting it was decided to &o\d a chrysanthemum and fruit shoiy, and several meetings were held to, the necessary arrangements for this. From various reasons—the unfavorable season, the fact that the Sowers had been but moderately cultivated, etc.— the show wfta u°t held, and the society incurred a debt in connection with preliminary arrangements of—. In the course of the year Mr H, M, Miles, owing to pressure of business engagements, had to resign his position of secretary. He had acquired a thorough grasp of the duties, and his resignation was a great loss. Mr Gaze consented to temporarily fill the position, Tl\e annual show was held on Thursday, January 11th, and proved very successful. The prize schedule numbered 216 exhibits against 210 the previous year, and there was a very large number of exhibits, notably in Class B, iq which the fruit and vegetables were excellent as well as numerous, apd QJnss D, the working up of which \yas entrusted to a sub-committee of ladies. In Class A the exhibits were also good, but not so numerous as upon previous occasions. The principal prir.etakers were Mr H. T. Clinch, Mr G. Smith (Main road), Mr Bennett, Mr G. Smith (Brown’s), Mr W. H, Scott, Mr Holwell, Mr MoNavightou, Mr John Hooper, and Mr Norton, There was no class this year for cottage gardens. In Class D special awards were given for butter, bacon, and bread by the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association, and by Mrs. Erodes for trussed fowls The prize for the latter was not awarded by the judges, and is in the society’s possession. The committee have to thank for their services the various judges, viz, Messrs Lowe. Lewis, and Britten, fruit and vegetables j Messrs D. McCallum and H. Oldfield, butter and bacon; Mr H. Tait, painting and drawing i Messrs Goldatone and McLeod, map-drawin,g, etc.Mr Qruickshanks. bread; and Mesdames Clark and Bcri, needlework,, etc. They also desire to thank the ladjes for their-' energetic services. The balance-sheet showed receipts £76 4a 3d, made up as follows; Members’ subscriptions, £2O; special prizes, £25 17 j ; advertising on schedules, £3 15s ; entry money, £1 7s fid ; cash at door, £23 Ids ; sundry receipts, £1 3s Gd. The expenditure was ; For prizes, £45 15s Gd ; hire of hail, baud, and show expenses, £lO 3s <Sd; printing and advertising, £l3 18s lid ; sundries, £2 9s 3d ; and credit balance, £1 IGs lid. The assets showed cash in bank, £1 IGs lid ; and material, £4 lO.s. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, referred to its satisfactory character. The Temnkn society had earned the right to be called the premier society of tho county. They had managed to pay all liabilities in full, and carried forward a small balance to credit. Mr Bennett, treasurer, and of Messrs Dann, Miles, and Smith, Junr., who had come forward at great sacrifice of time to assist the society. Mr Brown seconded the motion winch was carried unanimously. Mr E, Cutten moved a vote of thanks to the past officers of the society including in his motion the gentlemen mentioned by the president.—Carried. Mr Dann moved, that Sir W. Blunden, Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, Revs. Dickson, Gillam, Standage, and Father Fauvel, F. R. Flatman, M.H.R., M. Quinn, J. Guild, J. Blyth, J. T. M. Hayhurst and Dr Hayes be elected patrons. Mr E. Herbert was elected president, and Mr J. Talbot, vice-president. Mr J. McLean was elected treasurer, and Mr H. M. Miles secretary. The following gentlemen were elected a committee by ballot; —Messrs Saunders, P, Wareing, John Hollwell, E. C. Dann, S. Wright, W. H. Scott, J. Bennett, E. Cutten, A Smith. This concluded the business, and the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
