CRICKET.

During the whole of last week no small amount of excitement was noticeable among the boys attending Arundel school, at the prospect of a game of cricket with the Rangitata Station boys. It was arranged that that the so-called match should be played in Rangitata school ground on Saturday. The Arundel boys were conveyed thither in a conveyance belonging to Mr Wharton, who kindly volunteered to drive them down. Accordingly, Saturday afternooa saw the two teams ready for action at 2 30 sharp, and also a fair crowd assembled to Bee the sport. Our correspondents opinion is, that the Arundel boys ware new chums at the game, so it is needless to say that the match resulted in an easy/ win for Rangitata. However, the fact of their losing seemed no great disappointment to the visiting team, for they came not as " the conquering hero comes," but rather to have an opportunity of gaining an insight into the ins and outs of the game. Each side was able to have two innings, and after all was over, the scores, which were kept by Mr Hawkes and Miss Meredith, showed the following results: Arundel 33 first innings, 24 the second; Rangitata 53 first innings, 56 the second The highest number of runs made were as follows : Rangitata—J. Russell, 23; J. Winter, 20; J. Chalmers, 7; H. Millar, 7. Arundel—D. McMaster, 11; J. Lewis, 6; P. Charles, 6. After indulging in a few hearty all-round cheers, the boys made their way to the school, where a good spread was provided for them by the Rangitata School Committee, Mrs Hawkes, Mrs Coulter, and Miss Wharton, with their usual willingness and kindness, busied themselves in making it an enjoyable meal for the hungry cricketers, and after they had feasted to their hearts' content, they made a start for home amidst much shouting and hurrahing. Many thanks are due to Mr Wharton for his kindness in driving the boys down, and also to the school committee for their thoughtfulness in providing refreshments for the children.
