SUICIDE OF A NEWLY MARRIED MAN.
Conflicting Statements. Wellington, April 27. Herbert Edmonds, a schoolmaster at Piringa, Lower Wairarapa, shot himself at 7 a.m. on Friday. The death of Edmonds is the painful end of the romance which began iu St. Peter's Church a few days ago. Then, as telegraphed, his bride refused at the altar to marry him, but was persuaded to become his wife next morning. That day they left for Piringa, about 10 miles from Martinborough. A passenger who was in the train says the girl refused to speak to her husband all the way, and < before the journey's end was reached she had given him the slip and disappeared. It is said she is now in Melbourne, Edmonds was only 27 years of age, and of a bright and cheery disposition, not at all a man likely to commit suicide, but doubtless his temper was soured and life embittered by the events of the last few days. Mrs Edmonds' it appears did not go to Australia as reported, but returned tq her father, with whom she stayed till this week, when she Mfent back once more to her husband. She herself telegraphed the tragic news to her father, but nothing more than the mere fact of the suicide a\
at present known. April 28,. Mrs friends deny that she left her husband, and state that she merely re, turned to Wellington to attend a cousin's wedding. In a. fortnight her husband joined her, and they returned to P'A-inga on Thursday. It is also stated that Edmonds had been _ threats of violence, and flourishing a gun and Qajtr ridges.
The correspondent of the Lyttelton Times Bends following further particulars of the suicide of Herbert Edmonds at Piringa, brief particulars of which were giveu'on Saturday. The cause of the rash act is of course at present a mystery. It appears that at the conclusion of the marriage ceremony the bride aud bridegroom left for Piringa, where they lived together for a weok, at tho conclusion of which she returned to Wellington for the purpose of .'Attending her consiu's marriage While there -lie stayed with her parent" ;;', Urionta!
