GLADSTONE.
His light is quenchless, though his sun has set; The torch he bore aloft is still ablaze ; And, though he wears no jewell’d coronet, He’s crown’d for ever With a nation’s praise, ’Twas he who boldly entered in the fight With caste, and pomp, and prejudice, and pride, And with a hero’s heart and giant’s might, Burst Serfdom’s gates and flung them open wide. The “ masses,” not the “ classes,” was his choice — He ever made the peoples’ cause his own ; And yet, with facile pen and fluent voice, He was the foremost to defend the throne. Sprung from that brave and gallant little land Whose sons gave proof in many a stirring strife, With flashing claymore in each strong right hand, That they loved liberty far more than life, He treasured the tradicions of his race, And fought for freedom to the very end. Who is there now can fill the honor’d place Of England’s lover and of Ireland’s friend 7 When some true scribe shall tell, in coming years.
