James Moore and James Holmes have been committed for trial at Auckland on a charge of breaking and entering. At Fardell on Wednesday night Harry Laing, the well - known prize fighter, attempted to alight from a train whilst it was in motion. He fell, and getting under the train had both his legs cut off. The train pulled up at the bottom of Fardoll Hill, went back, and brought Laing into Wanganui. He was at once taken to the hospital. Both legs were amputated below the knees, but he sank, and died at half-past twelve o’clock on Thursday. At Lyttelton on Wednesday Ada Emma Flavell was fined 20s and costs for signing a declaration for a claim to vote when she was under 21 years of age. At Lyttelton on Wednesday James Patterson, proprietor of the pleasure grounds at Diamond harbour, was fined £SO and costs on a charge of selling beer without a license. In two other informations a nominal fine of Is and costs was imposed. Alexander Ramsay, 16 years of ago, was accidentally killed at the Kaitaugata coal mine on Wednesday morning. W. J. Atkinson, a settler, has been arrested on a charge of setting lire to a house at Grove bush, Southland, on*the Bth January with intent t" defraud two insurance companies.

At Auckland Miss Mam Marsh, a music teacher, was assaulted on Wednesday night on her way home. She was struck on. the head with some hard substance by an unknown man, and knocked down, receiving a nasty jagged wound on the head two inches long. The police are endeavouring to identify the cowardly assailant. Mrs Catherine Barnett, a widow, aged GG, died at Dunedin on Wednesday from the effects of a fall down a staircase At Dunedin John Larking was lined 40s and costs for adulterating meal with starch. William Gregg was similarly Lined fur adulterating popper with starch. Mr L- T. llobiuHou, inspector of Schools,

died at Greymouth on Thursday morning. He had been ill for mouths. A lad named Arthur Baslick was accidentally shot dead by another boy named John Brown, while out pigeon shooting.
