Mr Huddart has engaged Mr R. S. White, designer of the Campania, as nautical' adviser /in connection with the construction of the new 10,500 ton steamers which he proposes to have built. Financial experts declare that Mr Huddart has the brighest prospects of floating the scheme, and that the present time is opportune, as Australian shipowners hesitate to refrigerate steamers involving the sacrifice of a large proportion of cargo space, unless continuous cargoes are guaranteed. Mr Chamberlain, speaking at Edinburgh, taunted Lord Rosebery with putting his neck under the heel of the Irish by apologising when the Irish tigers raved. Obituary,—Sir F. P. Cunliffe Owen, aged 66 years. Paris, March 23. _ During a sermon in a church in Grenoble an infernal machine was exploded at the entrance. Twenty persons were injured, Berlin, March 23. Vienna, March 22. Owing to the Czar’s personal negotiations- the Government have agreed to the establishment of a commercial treaty. Madrid, March 22. A tremendous explosion occurred at Satander while a party of men were removing dynamite from the hulk which was wrecked in November last. Twelve persons were killed and thirty injured. The populace of Santander is incensed at the belief that the dynamite explosion was due* to neglect, and marched and attacked the civil governors and inspector of shipping. The military had to be called out to quell the disturabance, Brussels, March 22. News has been received that the Belgian expedition has seized the road leading to Lake Tanganyika, and defeated fha Arabd ’ Perth (W.A.,) March 25. A new arrival named Baker found a nugget weighing 140ozs at the new rush at Kurualpi. Sr. Petersburg, March 24. The Government has decided to open Kilia, the north arm of the river Danube, The Czar, the Emperor of Germany, and the Emperor of Austria will probably meet in autumn. The Czar’s personal action has removed the obstacles in the way of the AustroRussian commercial treaty being renewed. Buda Pesth, March 23. A theatre in the city refused to close out of respect to the death of Louis Kossuth, and student! expelled the players and audience. Serious riots took place owing to the refusal of the Government to hoist the black flag. March 24. Riots in connection with Kossuh’a death continue. Numerous windows have been smashed and shops looted. The police fired on the mob, aud the cavalry charged with sabres. Forty persons were injured. The Hungarian Government are not unsympathetic at the loss of Kossuth, but refuse him the honors demanded by the minority in the district. The Assembly has carried a resolution, placing on record the deceased’s patriotic services. Be will be buried in Pesth on April Ist. A number of riotous students hung a black flag from the royal box in Pesth theatre. New York, March 24. A large quantity of dynamite accidentally exploded in Pittsburg. Five persons were killed and many injured, Calcutta, March 22. Last year’s Indian deficit was 830,000 rupees. This year’s deficit is estimated at 1,750,000 rupees, and next year’s at nearly 3,000,000 rupees, which the import duty and the suspension cf famine and insurance funds will reduce to 300,000 rupees. Washington, March 22. The Senate Committee consider that the treaty, between the United States and China restricted the admission of Chinese into America. The American-Chinese treaty proposes that Americans going to China should be photographed and registered, similar to restrictions put on Chinese visiting America. Rio de Janeiro, March 22. President Peixoto has apologised for arresting a number of British Bluejackets. Buenos Ayres, March 23. A Portuguese warship declined to laud here the Brazilian rebel Admiral De Gama. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, March 23. At the inquest on the body of the man Cousidine, a verdict of manslaughter was returned against Constables White and Shield. Two harbour steamers collided iu the harbor to-day. One of tho steamers, with 200 passengers on board, was out to the water’s edge, and was saved from sinking only by the bulkherds until the passengers were landed.
.Am interesting point lifts cropped up in connection with Friendly Societies. The Registrar, backed up by counsel’s opinion, says that any outlay incurred in new buildings, taken from the society’s reserve fund, would bo at, the personal risk of the trustees. The matter opens up the question whether all the societies which have built halls out of their reserve, acted in contravention of the law, and whether those who incurred the outlay could not be compelled to restore the amounts. Intelligence from New Guinea reports the discovery of a rich reef at Suadest,e yielding by primitive means Gozs to tlx ton.
Tribal tights have taken place at Uossill Island, and the victors commemorated their success by a cannibal feast. Twelve hundred captives werg sacrjfied for the feast,
I Sir William McGregor and party were attacked by a powerful tribe of natives in the vicinity of .Porara river, but the latter were repulsed. There was no loss on Sir William McGregor’s side. March 25.
Three girls, sisters, named Yeomans, were drowned,. on Friday, in the Macquarrie river, near Bathurst, in view of hundreds of people. They attempted to cross the river in a trap, but the horse got out of its depth, and the occupants were thrown into the water. A man named McCredie, who attempted to rescue them narrowly escaped drowning, as the children clung tenaciously to hia neck. The Postal Delegates are highly pleased with New Zealand. Messrs Cockburu and Wynne are favourably impressed with the frozen meat trade, and think that the dairy trad? will prove the permanent prosperity*' ofthe colon y. They express themselves : satisfied that the Australian colonies will export as much as, if not more than New Zealand ini a few years. Mr Cockburu does not think the village settlements so advanced as those in Australia, especially regarding co-operation. Mr Kidd says that. the village settlements are not such a success as people are apparently led to believe. It seems to him that they are only successful where outside work can be obtained. Persons want, a certain amount of money to go iu for the settlements. Melbourne, March 23.
The Supreme Court has refused an application made by the defendant in the libel action Alison Smith v. Melbourne Age, to remit the trial of the Countjr Court, on the ground that plaintiff is not in a position to pay the costs. The announcement that definite steps have been taken by a British syndicate to construct railways on the land grant system is causing considerable excitement in the Central Territory, and those favoring the separation of the colony fear that the important portion of the Central Territory may be alienated before their claims for self-government are decided. They will probably cable to England protesting.
