GREAT BRITAIN AND THE COLONIES.
London, March 21,
At the luncheon given by the Empire League, among those present were the Agents-General of New South Waleß, New Zealand, Victoria, and Western Australia. Mr J. Lowther referred to the signal services rendered to Queensland and Victoria, respectively* by Sir T. Mcllwraith and Mr Reid. Sir T. Mcllwraith in reply advocated England granting preferential dutias to the colonies. He admitted that great difficulties and interests were involved, and that caution was required in dealing with the question, but said that though England perhaps might lose trade at first she would subsequently recoup herself. Mr Reid eulogised the assistance the AgentsGeneral had extended to him during his trip, and said that he believed that the House of Commons would pass in a single night a Bill permitting treaties between various colonies. Victoria and Canada, he added, were willing to guarantee a third of the principal and interest for the cost of the construction of the Pacific cable, and he appealed to the Imperial Government to do likewise, otherwise Victoria might refuse to co-operate.
