THE LICENSING ELECTIONS.
Owing to the post and telegraph offices being closed yesterday we are unable to give full details of the elections. Great difficulties have been experienced by returning officers in counting the votes. Mr Stubbs had not finished until 4.30 p.m. yesterday, after sitting up late each night, and then the Hakateramea return had not come in. The final results, less the Hakateramea, is as follows:—For lieenses 1054, reduction 109, prohibition 743, informal, 144. Tne number on the roll was 3253; the number polled was 2116; the poll is therefore effective, and the publicans have won. The following is the polling for the committee: — J.Talbot 1492 E. Richardson, junr 1430 J.J.Milne 1414 A.Mee ... 1383 A. M. Clark 1336 I. L. Morris 1328 D. Stowell 1319 M. Quinn 1275 A. H. McLean 966 J.Campbell... 919 T. R. Seddon ... , 914 Informal voteß, 39. The first eight were nominated by the moderates and have been elected; the last-named three were prohibition candidates. The Hakateramea return cannot alter the result. Rangitata— For licenses, 787; reduction, 102; prohibition, 643. For accommodation, 792; reduction, 95 ; prohibition, 620. Committee: Chapman 787, Dennistoun 997, Gudsell 763, McLean 1028, McQuilkin 961, Orbell 1001, Sealey 1021, Taylor 798, Thew 986, Thomas 1062, White ,942, Withell 785 ; informal 38. The excitement of the Geraldinc election closed about midnight on Wednesday, when an effigy of the Rev. L. M. Isitt was burned at the stake in the paddock opposite the Bank of New Zealand. The result of the local option poll was not known till 3 a.m. on Thursday, and very few people appeared to be interested enough to wait till that hour Timaru—For licenses, 1559; reduction, 536 ; prohibition, 863. Waikato—Candidates returned without a contest. Poll void. Bay of Plenty—lt is believed reduction wi'l be carried. Waipa—Poll void. New Plymouth—For license 1125, reUu Jtion 75, prohibition 841. Egmout —Moderates returned. Patea —So far the returns are in favor of hotels. Napier—Six moderates and two temperance candidates returned. Moderates will win. Waipawa—Reduction earned. Rangitikei—Poll invalid. Wanganui—Only moderates wero returned. Masterton—Almost certain poll will be vo : d. Wairarapa —Reduction carried. Wollington—For licenses, 3405; reduction, 1212 ; prohibition, 3161 ; informal, 1000 (supposed to bo chielly prohibition votes). Nelson —Six moderates and two prohibitionists woro returned. Grey—The licenses remain as at pro--Beut, but bottle licenses are doomed. Christchurch —For licenses, 1284 ; reduction, 1035 ; prohibition, 3067. Reduction carried. Lytteltou For licenses, 75<> ; reduction, 304; prohibition, BGB ; informal, 150. Riccarton—-Poll void owing to half not recording their votes. Avon For licenses, 787 ; reduction, 237 ; prohibitiou, 988 ; informal, 68. Roduction carried. Kaiapoi For licenses, CU»; reduction, IG3 : prohibitiuu, 1085. Prohibition will probably win. r Solwyu—Heavy prohibitiou polliug,but f final result not kuown. Ashburtou —Return incomplete, but so far favorable to moderates. Waitaki—Result not known, but reduction, if aot prohibition, will be carried.
1 Oamaru—For licenses, 859 ; reduction, 200; prohibition, 1109; informal, 235. Reduction carried. Waihemo—For licenses, 241; reduction, 121; prohibition,Bs9; informal,72. Return incomplete, but it is anticipated prohibition will be carried. Waikouaiti Returns not complete, but prohibition leading. Port Chalmers—For licennes, 5P9 ; reduction, 383; prohibition, 1272. Returns not completed. Dunedin City For licenses, 135 creduction, 2479 ; prohibition, 3903. A. commodation and bottle licenses pract l " cally the same. Informal, 2028. Prohibitionists wanted only 18 votes to win. Caversham For licenses, 357 ; reduction, 431; prohibition, 912. Accommodation and bottle licenses practically the same. Informal, 305. Taieri—The full returns are not yet available, but the local option vote, which is ascertained to be effective, will certainly be in favor of a reduction in the number of licenses. Bruce—lt is improbable that * sumcient number of votes will be recorded to make the poll effective. Clutha—The temperance candidates have an overwhelming majority, and it is confidently expected that when the complete returns come to hand it will be found that " no license " haß been carried. Mataura —Returns incomplete. Very strong prohibition vote. Invercargill Prohibitionists wanted only 139 votes to win. There were 530 informal votes, of whom 253 were women. Awarua —Heavily in favor of prohibition ; result not known. Wallace—Very heavy poll in favor of prohibition, but not complete.
