GOOD FRIDAY.
TEMUKA. The Churches.
Special services were held at St. Saviour's Church, Temuka, and St. John's, Winchester, on Good Friday, the Revs. Gillatn and Butterfield officiating. There was only a moderate attendance at the early morning service, but there was a fair congregation at that held at eleven o'clock, and also in the evening. The prayers were those appointed for the day, with special hymns, and sermons appropriate to the meditation on the Cross were preached. At the morning service at St. Saviour's the Sacrament of Baptism was administered. The Church will be specially decorated on Easter Day. /
There was no service at the Wesleyan, Presbyterian, or Primitive Methodist Churches. The Salvation Army held a special service for the day, which was fairly veil attended.
Services were held in the Catholic Church, Temuka, every day daring the week, and on Holy Thursday a solemn high mass was chanted, the Rev. Father Maloae being celebrant. After mass a procession of the children attending the school was formed. The little girls were dressed in white, and the boys wore red sashes. The procession, headed by handsome banners, marched round the church, the rear being brought up by the Rev. Father Malone carrying the Sacred Host to the Altar of Repose, which was beautifully draped and decorated with artificial flowers, in the midst of which a large number of lighted candles shone and added much brilliancy to the scene. The Host was placed on the altar, and remained there until after Good Friday's services. During the whole afternoon sud night the church was never empty, as different sets of persons throughout the whole time relieved each other at stated periods. On Good Friday the usual Bolemn service set apart for that day was celebrated by the Rev. Father Malone. A similar procession to that of the previous day was formed and again conveyed the Host back to the high alter. At 3 p.m. the service of the Stations of the Cross was held. There were large attendances at all the services. The Rev. Father Fauvel was absent in Christchurch, and the ceremonies were carried out most faithfully by the Rev. Father Malone with the assistance of the Sisters. The choir, under the direction of one of the Sisters, sang the foliowiug music : On Thursday: Battmann's M&ss, with "Credo" from the Mass of the Annunciation; at the offertory, "Bcce Panis " ; after elevation, " Ave Verum" ; during the procession, " Pange Lingua," " Magnificat," and " Laude Sion." Good Friday : During the Adoration of the Cross the "Stabat Mater" was sung; the Stations of the Cross at 3 p.m. Miss Connolly took the soprano solos, and Miss Lucy Qainn the alto. Miss. Quinn presided at the harmonium, and the singing was very good. GERALDINE. The weather was at its best for the holiday yesterday at Geraldine. All business places were closed, and the town was exceedingly quiet, except in the forenoon, when church-goers made their way to and from church. At St. Mary's Anglican Church the usual Good Friday services were held, and were well attended. The Rev. Mr Preston preached an able sermon from St. Luke xxiii, 28th verse. Services were not held at St. Mary'B Roman Catholic church, the Rev. Father Bowers, on Good Friday, being absent from the district. The only attractions in the town were the cricket match, Geraldine 2nd v. Timaru 2nd, which was played iu the presence of numerous spectators, and the shooting for money prizes by members of the local rifle corps.
