THE LICENSING ELECTIONS.
The election for Licensing Committees, and also for taking the vote on the questions for the regulation or suppression of the liquor traffic, took place yesterday. The day was extremely fine, but at Temuka very little excitement or enthusiasm was manifested throughout the whole day. Several traps were plying about, but the electors came in slowly and leisurely, and returned to their homes in the same way. The Telegraph Department made a mess of its arrangements. At about 12 o’clock yesterday it was made known that the offices would be open from 10 p.m. to 10.30 p.m., and we made arrangements for getting the results of the elections in Christchurch, Dunedin, Timaru, and other places, but of course, they were not known at such an early hour, and the consequence is that we cannot give them. Had the head officers in charge of the telegraph office understood what they were doing they would have kept them open until a later hour, so that there would be time to transmit the messages, but as it was, they did very little, good. They would have made money if the office had been kept open later, but in closing at such an early hour they lost. Of course the the local officers had nothing to do with this. They had only to obey orders. The result of the Pareora elections, so far as we have got it,
RAN GIT AT A. At Geraldine the forenoon was exceedingly quiet for an election. Up to noon only 106 votes were recorded, the voting on each side being about even. Excitement grew during the afternoon, about 200 votes having been recorded, at 3 o’clock the publicans being ahead. About 400 votes had been recorded at 5, the publicans leading by a good majority, and sparing no expense bringing voters from a distance to poll. The utmost good feeling prevailed amongst the contending parties. The Deputy Returning Officer was Mr Thomas Farley, with Mr Herlihy as scrutineer. The results of the voting at Geraldine were made known at II o’clock, the result of the voting for the committee beijig as follows ; —■ Sealey, T 286 Thomas, D. ... ... ... 280 Dennistoun, G, J. ... ••• McLean, D, ... ... ... ... *■74 W bite, A 271 Orbell, M, C 270 McQuilkin, J. 268 Tbevr, R 267 Taylor, T. ... ... ••• .«■ 168 Gudsell, J., juu. ... ••• ••• 166 Chapman, S. ... ... ••• ••• 165 Withell, J 152 Our latest information from the Mr J.
