Several parcels of new wheat have been offered, but for the most part growers decline to accept present rates. The quality and condition show much variation, and reports as to yield are very dispouraging. There is still fair enquiry for old wheat for mixing purposes and holders are firm at late quotations. The Antwerp wool sales have closed with no alteration of prices as compared with the opening. The total bales from the River Plate offered were 6000, of which 2500 were sold. There was not enough Australian offered to indicate prices. , In addressing the London Chamber of Commerce Mr Reid said that Victoria did not intend to borrow, but to go in etroDg for retrenchment and the opening of new markets. Imperial reciprocity was essential Mr R. Reid, of Victoria, warned his hearers to be prepared for a slight decrease of Australian imports owing to the retrenchment 01 the colonies. Victoria had almost decided not to borrow for a century, unless to build railways into the grain-growing centres. It was his intention to examine the French wine industry, to discover the cause of uniformity of texture.
Sir W. B. Perceval regretted that Victoria was unable to definitely pledge abstention of borrowing, which was the only way to restore confidence. At a meeting of shareholders of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Mr H. R. Greufell, chairman, said that the investments were being temporarily reduced. A call of £1 would probably be made shortly. The liquidation of the Bank of South Australia is being brought to a close. It is expected that a call of £1 will be made and that with the help of the sum thus derived, the assets will fully meet the liabilities. Feb. 16. A cargo of Victorian wheat has been sold at about 26s 6d.
The wool committee expect to iuduce the dock-owners to slightly reduce their charges.
Paris, Feb. 17. The Minister of Agriculture advocates 2 francs additional duty on corn instead of 8 francs.
