The wool sales opened to-day with a catalogue of 10,566 bales, an excellent selection. The attendance was large and competition was fair. Merinos commanded prices about equal to December rates, but occasionally prices were in buyers’ favour. Crossbreds are firm, with a slightly upward tendency. Jan. 17. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,880,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,000,000 quarters. The total number of bales of wool arrived is 336,000, of which 88,000 have been forwarded direct to the manufacturing districts. With the quantity hold over from last series 270,000 bales will be available for the present series. At the sales bidding is spirited, and prices weere well maintained. The American visible wheat supply is estimated at 103,200,000 bushels. At the wool sales, there is good competition for best wools. Medium scoured a Jd cheaper. Faulty sorts are weaker. The New Zealand and River Plate Land Mortgage Company (Limited), shows a net profit of £12,000 for the year. Of this amount £2OOO is placed to the reserve fund, and £IO,OOO carried forward. Two of the directors, Sir William T. Power and Mr Thomas Russell, C.M.G. ; retires. The new Directors are Messrs Nathan, McCoss, Clark, and H. J. Gibbs.
