GERALDINE Ist Y, AsHBURTOH Ist The above PValch took place at Geraldine on Wednesday last. The weather was decidedly unfavorable in the early part of the forenoon, but it cleared up in plenty of time, and a start was made at 11.30 The turf having been mowed on Tuesday the rain had not much effect on it, and it was soon in good trim for cricket. Ashburton won the toss and put Geraldine in first. Beckett and Fish led off, facing the bowling of Todd and Buchanan, and put up 47, when Beckett had the misfortune to be run out by a true shot at the wickets from the bowler. Beckett batted splendidly, making a couple of good hits through the fence for 4 each, and also 12 twos. H. W. Moore joined Fish. The latter played a very steady game ; scoring only 5 runs in the course of an hour Waiting his chance, however, he made a pretty hit through the fence for 4, and and another over the fence for 6, and closed his innings with 18 runs by skying softly into Colbert’s bauds, who was scouting for the visiting team. B. R. Macdonald’s wickets fell for 7 from a ball oft his pads. W. K. Macdonald (captain), with 8, was sent out by a rattling ball from Russell. Fearpoint for 2 was well caught by Gillespie in the slips, and H. W. Moore, with a carefully played 27, was clean bowled by Russell. W. M. Moore made a docent staud for 16, as did also F. W. ASHBURTON. A cup match was played yesterday at Temuka between Ashburton Ist and the local eleven. Ashburton won the toss and elected to bat. Denshire (23) and Andrews (11) were the principal scorers. The innings closed for 59. Temuka went to the wicket, and, strange to say, made the same score as Ashburton, namely 59. Djgnan (12) Ferguson (10), and Dann (8) were the principal scorers. Ashburton essayed the attempt the second time, and closed their innings with 6 wickets down for 71. Gillespie got 7 wickets for 23 runs and Dignan 3 for 15 in the first innings, whilst in the second Goldstone took 4 and Gillespie 2.
