; At a representative meeting of minora in Newcastle it was decided to take a ballot whether they should submit to a reduction in the hewing rate from 3s 6d per ton or not. The Minister for Public Works after an interview with the Government contractors has written a minute directing that if it is found at any time during the progress of contracts that an undue number of men •who have not. been domiciled in the colony six months are on the work, he Bhall have power to call upon the contractor to discharge such men, and in the event of non-compliance with the order the contracts shall be candancelled. The Minister specially refers to the new contracts which have just been signed in connection with the sewerage works of the city. The total value of these contracts is £IOO,OOO.
