GOVERNMENT BUSINESS.
In Cabinet on Tuesday it was decided to agree to Dr Lemon retiring on pension from the Superintendency of the Telegraph Department at his request. He severs his connection with the Department at the end of March. Ho has been nearly 30 years in the Public Service, and is entitled to pension of £350. Ha will shortly open up a large electrical business in Wellington, Information already in possession of the Commissioner of Customs respecting the trade between New Zealand and Canada, shows that as yet it is not of a very extensive character. Personally Mr Ward is of opinion that the colony not be represented a£ the ppn|ereiiqe in tho Dominion, and he believes that as far as New Zealand is concerned negotiations could be carried on by correspondence. Mr Ward says that what is wanted first is a Vancouver line of stejuqera to qafl New Zealand posts, aqd reciprocity oqqld be discussed later on. The Bills m etl H olie 4 as to be introduced by the Government early in the session will be distributed for consideration before the opening of Parliament.

During the Don. My type’s -visit he had a conversation with the Premier on the subject of deep mining, the issue of which is that the Government telegraphed to him ashing if the Victorian Government will lend their expert, Mr Merry, for the purpose of reporting on the beat means of developing the mining industry in New Zealand. Mr Mclntyre replied from Napier promising tp jay the matter before hi« Government. He does not anticipate any difficulty.
