TIMARU WOOL SALES.
The first of the season’s wool sales was held on Tuesday in the Assembly Rooms. To give buyers longer time to examine and value the wools, the sale was altered from the usual 10 a.m. to 1 p.ra., and tha alteration was mutually satisfactory to brokers and buyers. Some 840 lota were put through by 4.45. Fifteen buyers operated, and, as usual, the attendance of wool-growers and others interested was very large. Owing to the amount of rain we have lately been favored with, the opening catalogue was smaller than usual. On the whole the wool was distinctly lighter and in better condition than last year’s clip. Competition was very spirited, more especially for the medium qualities of fleece wools, while pieces and locks ruled a shade higher than last year. Com - pared with opening rates of last season, prices yesterday were about equal. The bulk of the wool offered was sold under the hammer, the withdrawal being less than usual. Five catalogues were submitted, viz.: Bales. Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association 1361 Guinness & LeCren ... ... 831 National Mortgage & Agency Co., and H. B. Webster & Co. ... 377 N.Z. Land Association, Limited... 339 Miles & Co., Limited 189 Total 3097 The following were the ruling prices for the day : —Halfbreds, 7d to 9d; threequarterbreds, 6£d to B|d ; crossbreds, 6d to Bjd ; merinos, 5d to 6gd ; pieces, 4d to 6|d ; locks, l£d to 3|d.
