In returning thanks for his re-electiou-Mr Balfour said the Council had always given him the greatest supp-'; r t, and if they differed they agreed to differ, and had never quarrelled or felt any ill-will. With regard to payment of the chairman he thought that needed inquiry. He was anxious to do all that he dould in the time at his disposal, and it would require a good deal of time to look after everything properly. He need say nothing more about that now. He wished to draw attention to a matter' which had been mooted by tiro Levels Hoad Board at their last meeting, the merging of the road boards in the County Council. He knew that many ratepayers were favorable to that course. He brought the matter before the Council some time ago, and it was decided to leave it to the now Council. It was an important matter, and he only mentioned it now so that members could think it over. They had no doubt noticed that the Ministers had spoken of introducing some changes in the system of local government, and it would be better to wait and see what thq Oovernmeut would do before taking any steps.
