DESTRUCTIVE HURRICANE.
London, Nov. 19, A fearful hurricane has swept the East and West coasts. Thirteen wrecks are reported, the list including several large steamers. In the majority of cases the crews were drowned. Railway lines run ning along the coasts have been undermined, and trains on the highlands delayed. In several towns factory stacks have collapsed and killed many of the workers. In Scarborough and Sunderland, streets of houses have been wrecked. The gale has been unequalled in violence during the last fourteen years. Nov. 20. It is estimated that 200 people were drowned in the gales along the coast, including the crews of unknown ships which came to grief on the Goodwin Sands, a large steamer at another at St. Ives, a. sailing sbi;, a t Molinhead, a steamer at Firth; in addition to the Wreck of 24 coasters, chiefly on the east coast of England. Many wrecks are reported from the northern coast of France, A hundred and thirty-four corpses were washed ashore after the hurricane. Some were found frozen. The hurricane is still blowing in England. The piers at Calais were smashed. Lifeboats were useless, but many were saved by rocket apparatus. Tho storm was accompanied by a heavy fall of snow, and in Essex snowdrifts were Oft deep. The severity of the weather disorganised railway traffic, and completely stopped the Chanuel steam traffic. Eight Hastings fishing boats were wrecked. The storm was also felt on the French coast, where several vessels were wrecked, resulting in a loss of upwards of 100 lives.
