TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the above was ' held on Tuesday evening. Present—■ Me3srs J. Salmond (chairman), C. Bates, ' A. Russell, G. Levens, T. F. Hooper, J. J Grant, J. W. Miles, and D. Taylor. : CORRESPONDENCE. ' < Correspondence wad read and dealt with i as follows : ] From the Education Board, notifying '< that the Inspector's examination would ' take place on or about the 13th, 14th, 1 15th, and 16th of November.—The Inspector had already attended. 1 From the same, notifying payment to ; the credit of the board of the sum of , £ll 7s 6d for incidentals. From the same, notifying that a vacancy had occurred on the board owing to the resignation of Mr G. H. Rhodes, i and asking the committee to nominate a ] gentleman to fill the position.—The committee had no nomination to make. ' From the Rev. G. Barclay, signifying j that he had consented to stand for the , vacancy on the board. , From the Secretary Education Board, covering attendance returns for the quarter ending Sept. 31st, 1893. t From Mr Theo. B. Strong, applying for ; leave of absence from December 11th to ' December 18th, in order to attend the i matriculation examinations. headmaster's report. \ The headmaster's report was read and ( dealt with as follows: — ; " I have the honor to report re • the < :bove school: The average attendance j ;ur the past month has been 3Q0.8.-—ln- '• .spector Gow examined the school last ' week, and from the schedules I find that , 93.5 per cent, of the children presented , have passed the examination. You will \ shortly receive the detailed report from j the board. —I herewith forward the sum ] of £1 18s 7d, which, together with the : sum of 17s 5d placed to the committee's : credit, makes a total sum of £2 16s col- | lected for stationery, etc.-—I also forward j an application by Mr Strong for leave of j absence to attend the matriculation ( examination next month. Considering ( that the object for which he asks leave is ( a laudable one, I beg to recommend that ( his application be granted.—lt will be , necessary for the committee at this meet- i ing to fix the Christmas holidays, and to i make arrangements re prize-gjyjng. I ■ shall be pleased to confer with you on ; these matters. —I beg to draw the committee's attention to the state of some of our windows, the pulley cords of which require renewal. Some little repairs are also wanted to the yeiiotiau blinds.—l enclose a memo, re Bible-reading in school.—l have the honor, etc., "D. Ferguson, " Headmaster." Mr Levens moved—" That this committee congratulate Mr Ferguson' and his assistants, upon the exceptionally successful results of the Inspector's examination."—Seconded by Mr Bates and carried. The head who waß present, thanked the committee for the vote passed. His efforts, he might Bay, had been ably seconded by the staff generally, and the children, under the exceptional pressure brought upon them after had risen to the occasion, Had there been no interruption of study he believed the result would haye been much better. Mr Strong's application for leave of absence was granted. The secretary was authorised to, arrange I for repairs and alterations, to spouting agreed upon at last meoting, as the workman engaged had not carried the same out. It was agreed, on the motion of Mr Kussell, that Mr Bates be instructed to arrange for repairs to Venetian blinds and window pulleys. As Mr Gillain did not attend, the discussion on the subject was adj mrned. HOLIDAYS. Mr Russell moved—" That the school be closed on Thursday December 14th, and re-opened on January 22nd. 1894," Seconded by Mr D. Taylor. Mr Levens said in view of the fact of the school having been closed for so loiig a time on account of sickness, etc, lie should move—" That the school be reopened on January tho 15th." Seconded by Mr Grant. In further explanation of the amendment both mover and seconder
stated that they understood parents as a rule objecUd to long holidays. The amendment was put by the chairman, and 4 members voted for it, and three ag.imet t. The chairman gave hie deliberative and casting vote against the amendment, and declared the motion carried. prizes. In connection with the annual distribution of prizes, it was agr9ed on the motion of Mr Russell, seconded by MiBates, that the prize-giving day be fixed for December 15th, and it waß further resolved that the sum of £l2 be devoted to the purchase of prizes, the selection of same to be left to the chairman and headmaster, who were empowered to devote a sum not exceeding £2 towards sewing prizes, in addition to special donations promised. On the motion of Mr Russell, it was resolved that the chairman distribute the prizes as awarded, or in the event of his engagements not permitting his undertaking the duty, that he find a substitute. The secretary was instructed to arrange for the services of several ladies mentioned to act as judges of sewing. the janitor. Mr Russell said that he had been asked to draw the attention of the committee to the janitor's neglect of certain duties in respect of sweeping, etc. He did not do so solely up.m his own responsibility, but, complaint having been made, he, as the member of committee resident nearest the school, had been asked to inspect the rooms complained of. —After consideration and some explanation it was agreed that the chairman speak to the janitor upon the subject, and draw his attention to the complaints made. visitors. Messrs Grant and Bates were reappointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS. An account for £2 10s was passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
