OTAGO PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD.
At the Presbyterian Synod, Dunedin, there was rather an angry discussion concerning commercial morality on the deliverance re state of religion. Mr E. B. Cargill strongly condemned the charges of dishonesty which had been made against the farmers and merchants. There was no foundation for them. (The Eev. J, Gibb said that there were business men whose word was as good as their bond, but there were those who admitted that it was hard to live up to the Sermon on the Mount and be honest. Mr Cargill: It is false; an unscrupulous falsehood. Mr Gibb claimed the Moderator’s protection. Mr Cargill said that he claimed protection. Mr Gibb said that he was explaining that in the face of keen competition and cutting down of prices it was difficult for a man to bo honest. Mr Cargill said that he was an honest man, and he (Mr Gibb) thanked God that there were others in his congregation. But with few exceptions business men would tell them that it was extremely difficult to be scrupulously honest. The Church ought to sympathise with these men. There were others who could if they tried be more honest. was astonished at such claptran applauded. * ‘ ° 6mg The Moderator that th should discuss the ma** , , J Mr ail' -er calmly. v said that Mr Cargill was the render and he ought to know better. Mr Cargill said that he would leave the Synod. He could not sit and hear a parcel of people applauding the things that they were doing. Mr Gibb said that there were commercial sins which required to be repressed. What was wanted was united action. Mr Keith Eamsay also objected to the deliverance, and said that there was no foundation for the reference made to commercial morality. After further discussion, in which Mr Cargill said that in 50 years’ experience he had never been asked to do anything not in accordance with morality, the deliverance was referred back to alter the terms.
