Arrivals and Departures. The returns of arrivals and departures from the colony during the month of October, as made up from the Registrar-General’s Department by telegraphed returns, show that the arrivals numbered 1589, as compared with ifSS for October 1892 ; and the departures 698, as compared with 750 for the same month last year. r £'b& h,s h gain to the colony was therefore 871 for last month, as against 1008 for October 1892. Sporting-. —The spring meeting of the Victoria Racing Club commenced on Saturday, when there was a very large attendance. The weather was most favourable. The Maiden Plate was won by Alpine, the Melbourne Stakes by Mr D. O’Brien’s Loyalty, and the Hotham Handicap by StraightfirA The principal event of the day was the Derby, for which Carnage, the Sailor Prince, Pounamu, Patron, J'hrht Artillery, Gar con, Salient, Projectile, Maru, Pulvil, Trenchant and S,planum started, Patron being the favourite. For the Greater part of the race Projectile led. When turning into the straight Projectile hell the lead just in advance of Pulvil, Light Artillery, with Pounamu. the Sailor Prince, Carnage, and Patron f oho wing in the order named.
