CRICKET.
ASHBURTON AND GERALDINE V. TIMARU AND TEMUKA. There was a large attendance on Thursday last in Victoria Park, Temuka, to witness the match between combined teams of the S.C. Cricket Association. The Geraldine and Ashburton team were the first to bat. The two batsmen who opened the game were both taken smartly in the slips by Rothwell. H. W. Moore and Denshire followed, and made a splendid stand. The former played a faultless innings for 35 runs, and fell at last to a good ball from Gillespie. Denshire began to bat rather unsteadily, and gave one or two easy chances, which were refused by the field. He then settled down to accurate and fast play, which he kept up until a shooter from Hayhurst dismissed him, his score being 86 runs. With the exception of B. R. Macdonald (15), the remainder of the team found Diguan too good for them, and the innings closed for 163 runs. The fielding of the Timaru and Temuka was not up to first eleven pitch. Seven catches were dropped, the majority by Timaru. We think the long-stop should have been dispensed with, and wicketkeeping not attempted, which would have given another man in the field where he was urgently needed. Timaru and Temuka opened their innings badly, the first ball taking a wicket. Postlethwaite followed, and was shaping well when ho gave a bad chance to short-stop. The bowler appealed instantly, . and as the umpire gave the word “ out ” the fieldsman dropped the ball. Postlethwaite left the crease without appealing to the other umpire, which he should have done, and the decision would have been reversed. There remained very little time for play, and whe i stumps were drawn 4 wickets had fallen for 28 runs. Mrs A. M. Clark, assisted by the Misses Paterson and Clark, provided excellent tea and toothsome delicacies for the visitors and the two teams, their kind attentions being greatly appreciated. The following are the scores: GERALDINE AND ASHBURTON.
TEMUKA Y. TIMARU. A team will be selected on Tuesday night to play in the cup match on Prince of Wales’ Birthday (November 9th) at Timaru. All members are requested to go in for steady practice.
