AFFAIRS AT THE CAPE.

Capetown, October 23. Doctor Jameson, Administrator of Mashonaland, directed the recent manoeuvres against the Matabeles, and has been lavishly praised for the success of his efforts. In the engagement near ludianios the British were armed with Maxim and Gatling guns. The natives were completely defeated in both actions. It is expected that Major Adams’ force in conjunction with Khama’s men, will immediately attack Lobeugula’s stronghold at Bulawayo. There is reason to believe that Europeans are directing the operations of the Matabeles. Color is given to this suspicion from the fact that the tactics of the Matabeles when they venture into open country excel those usually displayed by Zulus.

■ Dr Jameson reports that one thousand scouts are beating the country within a radius of ten miles of the united columns. Large numbers of cattle wore secured after the recent engagement. A email

party of Matabeles entered Talar, but were driven back with the loss of three of their chiefs. The Matabeles are massing on the Shanganu river, and the British columns are pressing forward. The British forces have been successful in several shirmishes during the last day or two. Major Adams is expected to reach Bullawayo to-day. Lobengula has sent one of his chiefs to parley with the English. King Lobengula with his followers is retreating towards Bulawayo. The Fort Victoria and Chartered Company’s column are marching southward to meet the forces under the command of Major Adams. Oct. 24. Details show that what was described as an engagement between the Matabeles and the British on Wednesday, was merely a skirmish. Lobengula has divided his forces, and intends to attack Tahi.
