PAREORA ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Will you allow me space to give my views oa the political situation in Pareora ? I consider the Temperance party have done a lot of mischief. They held meetings throughout the district, called a meeting of delegates, and—of course the whole thing was cut and dry—the Rev. Mr Barclay, who is not a supporter of the Government, was selected. Now I object to turn out one Conservative to put in a’n other. Mr Barclay has never taken any active part in promoting temperance, and never shown any sympathy with the laboring classes. On the contrary, he has always worked on the Conservative side in every election in this district. The Temperance party think they can run Mr Barclay in spite of all the Liberals, and in spite of the Labor Union, but they will find their mistake. lam quite willing to support the Direct Veto so long as the candidate is a Liberal, but when wo get our choice of several Liberal candidates, who are also ten times more favorable to temperance than Mr Barclay, why should we throw them aside for a Conservative 2 The whole thing is a Conservative dodge, and I hope Liberal temperance men and women will see through it. The whole question is whether we shall support a Liberal candidate, who is in favor of the direct veto and has worked hard for it for years, dr - are we to support a Conservative, who has only just now taken up temperance as the trump card for running the election ?—I am, etc.,

Direct Veto.
