POLITICAL.

Ohristchukuh, Oct. 11

Mr W. N. Cathro, solicitor, Rangiora, has beeu asked to contest the Kaipoi seat but has not yet decided. Hokitika, Oct. 12.

In response to a very largely- signed requisition from all parts of the district, Mr Seddon has decided to again offer his services to this constituency. He will probably be returned unopposed. DUNEDItiT, Oct 12.

The General Election is likely to be fixed for December 12th, or not later than the 17th.

Mr H. S. Fish, M.E.R, was presented to-night with an address welcoming him back from his arduous duties, thanking him for his zeal and assiduity, and impressing the hope that he may long be spared to represent the people in Parliament. The address, which was presented by Mr A. Sligo, bore over one thousand signatures. The Mayor presided, and referred to the services rendered by Mr Fish to thn local bodies.

Mr Ward is expected to have a walk over for Awarua.

The Wellington, correspondent of the Otago Daily Times, dealing with tie Legislative Council, says :—Of the fresh appointments' intended, since seven additional will but equalise parties, it may be assumed that not less than 10, and probably 12, will be nominated if the Government return to power. The Council may be further reformed by limiting the term of service of all members to seven years, the time fixed by the Act of last year under which the new Councillo.s were created. Previous appointments were for life, and the Liberal party now contend that this is an anomaly that should be obliterated. To do this a short amending bill might be passed making the Act of last year retrospective. This will, I venture to think, be found to be the policy of the Government in the direction of their reform of the Council.
