The Premier addressed the electors of Wellington suburbs at Petone on Saturday night in support of Mr J. Wilford, who Mr Seddon announced had been selected as the Government candidate. The mayor presided, and there was a large attendance, including a number of ladies. The Premier reviewed the work of the session, and blamed the Council for not passing various Bills calculated to improve the condition of the laboring classes. He stated most emphatically that the Government were determined not to extend the tenure of the Railway Commissioners for another year, but said that he had not exactly decided what course to pursue. In view of the treatment of Government measures by the Council it was intended to ask for further appointments to that Chamber. Thi number had not yet been fixed, but the matter will shortly be considered in Cabinet. Sir Patrick Buckley, the Hon. J. Carroll, and Mr 0. Wilford also addressed the meeting. The usual ’vote of thanks was passed, and the utmost enthusiasm was displayed. Mr Seddon states that he will contest either his present seat or Wellington City at the General Election. The Minister of Education left for Christchurch on Saturday. The Post-master-General leaves for Invercargill today, and the Minister of Justice proceeds to Auckland towards the end of the week. Sir Robert Stout and Mr W. McLean announce themselves candidates for the city. -
