WINCHESTER NOTES.
The Winchester Choral Society rendered the Service of Song entitled “ Uncle Tom,” in the Sunday School, in aid of the Sunday School funds. As the night was mild and clear, and the entertainment for the benefit of a good cause, it was generally expected there would bo a large attendance. Such, however, was not the case, as only about 30 persons put in an appearance, which at an admission of Is, amounted to a small sum. I think had it been advertised and for what purpose it was given, there would have been a much larger audience. The society, under the able conductorship of the Rev. M. W. Butterfield, has made good progress since it was formed. They have performed on one or two occassions before at socials. The tenor part then was rather weak, but on this occasion could be plainly hoard. There was one noticeable fault, viz., want of promptness in rising to commence the different pieces. This no doubt was due to the Rev. Butterfie d having his time fully occupied in giving the connective readings, thus being pi evented from discharging his duties as leader. Those present enjoyed the evening very much, and the excellence of the performance was certainly worthy of a larger audience. Mr R. Smith on behalf of the Sunday School thanked the society for their efforts in raising funds for that cause. Refreshments kindly provided by Mr R Smith were handed round to the performers at the close of the enterment.
Trout fishing has commenced. There seems to be abundance of fish in the streams, and no doubt Winchester will this season uphold its former reputation as a resort for visitors during the fishing season.
