The Lynch Family. —We hear that the • Lynch Family of Bellringers and Glassophonists will pay Geraldine a visit about the end of October or early in November next. Dr Talmage. —A resident of Welling- ' ton, who has just returned from a trip to America and England, Was told in New , York by Dr Talmage that he intended to visit New Zealand within the next two years. Fire. —The Kaikanui Hotel, at Kaiapoi, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening, The building was insured in the Liverpool and London and Globe for £650, and the furniture and contents in the same office for a similar amount. Supreme Court. —The criminal business of the Sunreme Court at Wanganui concluded (n Wednesday evening, when a , verdict of “ not guilty ” was returned in the case against Dr B. H. Marshall, for indecent assault on a young girl, Presbyterian Sabbath Schools, Among the most successful scholars in the recent examination in the Presbytery of South Canterbury, were Emma Cooper, 178 marks out of a possible 200, first in the ’ Middle Division, and H. Walton, Geraldine, 148 marks out of a possible 200, fifth in the Junior Division. Open Lodge Night. —On Tuesday evening the Temuka Good Templars hold one of ' their *• open lodge ” gatherings m the Social Hall, when they will give a varied programme of songs, readings, recitations, etc., and in the course of which refreshments will be dispensed. The charge for admission is 6d. Geraldine Cricket Club.— A special i meeting of the Geraldine Cricket Club was i field on Thursday evening, Mr R. H. Pear- • point in the chair. Mr A. F; Thompson was ( ai-pointed secretary in place of Mr J. . Leversedge, the lat er having left the district. The club authorised Mr G. Ward r to expend £5 in putting the ground in good order. The opening day was fixed for next 5 Thursday. Shearers and Laborers Union.— Members of the Geraldine branch of this I union are reminded that a meeting takes place this evening, when a report of tne business transacted at the Ashburton Con- ‘ ferenoe will be submitted, officers elected, i and arrangements made for selecting a candidate for Parliament. The business ’ being so important, members should make a point of being present. The New Plymouth Highwayman.— At the Supreme Court, New Plymouth, yc torday. Robert Herman Wallath, charged on three counts, with that he did on July 20tb, 185)3, shoot with a, revolver at one Harold John Mole Thompson with intent: (1) to maim, (2) to disable, and (3) to do grievous bodily harm, was sentenced to 8 years’ penal servitude for shooting with intent, and to three years for demanding 1 with threats. The prisoner, who said the shooting was accidental, cried bitterly
when sentenced. Supposed Wkegip —The Marine Depart--1 ment have received a ifljegram from Captain Fairchild, of the Hinemoa, from Napier, stilting that he saw'a quantity of wreckage five miles off Cape Palliser on Tuesday vt noon. A search was made as ~ far as the wreckage could be found. The Salvation Army at Milton.— ; The Bruce Herald says :—" The Salvation ; Army still continue their open-air seryices. notwithstanding the recent decisions of Mr Hawkins as to the illegality of their action ' 'in so doing. On Saturday night they took [ up their old stand between Mr Gray's store and the Bank of New Zealand, and for a time traffic was completely blocked. It seems a great pity that they will not make some endeavor to conform to the by-law and thus keep. themselves in touch with the people of the town. Very little tact on their part is needed to accomplish all that is necessary."
Cricket.--The Temuka club opened theii season, on Thursday afternoon with a match between sides picked by Mr D. Ferguson (captain), and Mr J. McCaskill (hon/sec), The secretary's side proved too good for their opponents, and won the game by 39 rnus. Dignan and Brosnahan bowled well, and Dignan 20, Anderson 13, and J. McCaskill 13, being the most successful batsmen. There will be another practice match this afternoon at three o'clock; practice nights have been arranged for Tuesdays and Fridays, also Thursday and Saturday afternoons, and members are requested to attend regularly. Temuka P. & H. Society.—The schedules for the annual show in January next are in course of preparation, an<l will be issued, with all particulars as to prizes, etc., within the next fortnight. Private prizes have been promised more freely than usual, and should the season be favorable a good, show should result. A committee of ladie3 are working up Class D, that devoted to needlework, home cookery, etc., and they have received many promises of support. Those desirous of renewing their membership or of joining the society should communicate at once with any member of the committee, with the treasurer, Mr J. Bennett, or with the secretary, Mr A W. Gaze. A Pemuws Voyagb. Private advice received at Lyttelton states that the barque Highland For'.sfc. homeward bound from Timaru, had an ex.;itiug experience on the voyage with bad weather and ice. On May 3rd a terrific gale was encountered. The pea took away the wheel and wheelbox, besid s the champion ladder and obher things from the deck, and smashed iu the main hatch. In heaving the ve c scl to she went over on her beam ends, with the fore and main yards in the water, and lay in that position for three days during which the gale raged with all its fury. The weather was bitterly cold, and a great many of the crew were frostbitten, and to add to their discomfort they were unable to pet anything to eat or drink, as all stores handy were spoiled. The lower topsail and foresail were cut away and all the starboard bulwarks were carried away. On the third day the glass started to rise, and gradually as the weather moderated the vessel ritfutud.
